Why is the sky blue?

Why are the cars not crashing into each other at the intersection?

Why do I have to learn algebra if no one actually uses it at the supermarket?*

Asking “why?” has gotten me into trouble, especially growing up in Singapore where the norm is to do as one is told. But this type of questioning is what led me from graphic design, to service design and urban studies, and now user experience. I was not satisfied with making useless, pretty things or following norms without good reason. I want to build products and services for people to flourish, not just survive.

A common thread through all my disciplines is my love for design, people, and cities. I thrive in the intersection of these areas, particularly as they relate to mitigating inequalities and inequities, especially in marginalized and at-risk communities.

In my spare time, I send snail mail, read graphic memoirs, and cook food that reminds me of my home country Singapore. I co-lead the Service Design Network: New York Chapter.
